Prayers Needed |
Lead | |
|
Merlin is at the emergency vet. He had a bad reaction to one of the drug they gave him for his fractured vertebra and threw up a giant pool of blood tonight.
I am so scared I'm going to lose him. Please keep him in your prayers.

Oh, I'm so sorry! Of course I will send prayers for poor Merlin. They can do wonders with Carafate and other things for intestinal/stomach bleeding, so
keep a good outlook. They fixed Lexi when she had blood pouring out of her anus from her intestines, so they will fix Merlin too. Keep that thought!
Prayers coming.

Thanks everyone! Merlin is out of the hospital now. He is still very listless and doesn't want to eat, but at least they seem to think he is well enough
to be out of the hospital. Hopefully things will improve. Please keep him in your thoughts.

So, what did they say the problem was?
Lexi has had episodes of vomiting red blood. The vet put her on 20mg of Pepscid (generic version is famotidine) every day and she hasn't had a single one since. It is OTC and is very, very cheap in the generic at Walmart. Less than a quarter of the price of generic at Walgreens in fact.

They suspect the Deramaxx gave him a bleeding ulcer or ulcers and are treating it as such. They didn't want to knock him out again to scope him since he
had just been knocked out to have the back x-ray and they did a whole body x-ray at that point and there was nothing amiss other than the cracked vertebra so
we are quite certain that it was a bad reaction to the Deramaxx. He has eaten a little chicken and some bread and crackers. Will not eat his rice. He has not
pooped yet and he has a general blood smell to him, but not his breath, so I hope that is only him digesting some remaining blood from the ulcer. Keeping my
fingers crossed that we get through the night without incident.

oh poor Merlin (((((giant hugs for you both))))) I am keeping him in my thoughts- and you too!
I wonder if he would eat low fat cottage cheese? I know when Loki was having stomach p[roblems (nothing like this though) he would eat cottage cheese and rice mixed together and it was soothing. |

He pooped almost normal today. A few black spots so there is still some blood in there. He is really pissed off that he is expected to eat a bland
diarrhea/ulcer diet and not dog food and treats. Finally figured out if I made him a rice and egg white omelet he'd eat the rice and not spit it out like
it is poison. He used to like rice, but I suspect he blames it for how sick he felt at the vet since he was eating a mostly rice canned food there. Gets to
have a little kibble in his food tonight. He will probably be excited by that. It is raining and cold today and he is shaky in the hind end and quiet, but I
hope that is the back injury which started this whole thing, not the stomach issues or a reaction to the antibiotics. He can't have the opiates for his
back until his stomach is okay so the poor guy is probably hurting a lot.

Do you have a heating pad for his back? That will help his pain. Prayers still going out for him.....

He finished up his antibiotics and stomach meds yesterday. Went to the vet for a follow up. She said she was surprised how good he looked. Says she can feel
that the back is already starting to repair itself and has given me permission to take him for two one mile walks per day (for a dog that normally does 5 - 10
miles a day this is very short, but necessary). At the beginning of August we can start adding one block at a time until he works up to his normal routine. He
can't climb up on the couch or bed or swim until the end of August, poor boy. She says it could take another two weeks before his stomach is fully healed
and he needs to have a dogfood/rice mixture and Pepcid until he is no longer having loose stool, and excessive belching and farting. Keep those paws crossed
that things keep going the right way.
I don't own a heating pad, and I doubt he'd sit still for one anyway especially since it is summer and I don't have air conditioning. Most non-opiate pain pills are anti-inflammatories and related to the NSAIDs which are totally off his list now. There are steroids too, but they can have bad side effects and we don't want to risk adding to the trouble so the poor guy is going to have to do this pill free for awhile.
