He finished up his antibiotics and stomach meds yesterday. Went to the vet for a follow up. She said she was surprised how good he looked. Says she can feel that the back is already starting to repair itself and has given me permission to take him for two one mile walks per day (for a dog that normally does 5 - 10 miles a day this is very short, but necessary). At the beginning of August we can start adding one block at a time until he works up to his normal routine. He can't climb up on the couch or bed or swim until the end of August, poor boy. She says it could take another two weeks before his stomach is fully healed and he needs to have a dogfood/rice mixture and Pepcid until he is no longer having loose stool, and excessive belching and farting. Keep those paws crossed that things keep going the right way.

I don't own a heating pad, and I doubt he'd sit still for one anyway especially since it is summer and I don't have air conditioning. Most non-opiate pain pills are anti-inflammatories and related to the NSAIDs which are totally off his list now. There are steroids too, but they can have bad side effects and we don't want to risk adding to the trouble so the poor guy is going to have to do this pill free for awhile.
